Once a Colonel, Always a Colonel
Alumnus Ryan Shazier Injured
By Jose Bercande ([email protected])
Plantation High football alumnus Ryan Shazier, (Class of 2011), attended Ohio State University, was drafted by and is a player on the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team.
As a strong Linebacker, this season was going well for Shazier until recently. After a collision on the field with an opposing Receiver, a severe spinal cord injury occurred. Shazier was hospitalized in Cincinnati and was then flown back to Pittsburgh to undergo spinal surgery. His prognosis at that time was unclear. “He is in really good spirits, tough guy,” said his coach, Mike Tomlin after visiting Shazier. “He has great support from family and loved ones…We realize and understand he is in really good hands and getting expert medical care.” |
Shazier’s condition is continuing to improve. On Sunday, December 17, he was able to surprise many by attending a home game as a fan; he was seen sitting in the skybox.
Teammate T.J. Watt shared his thoughts - “Just how positive he is has shown us how we should approach our day-to-day lives…and not take things for granted…” We, the Plantation High School Family, send warm wishes and honor Ryan Shazier; we hope that all continues to go well. |
