No Pay, For The Coast Guard
The government shutdown is affecting service members of the Coast Guard and T.S.A. workers.

The ongoing government shutdown, now the longest in United States history, has affected numerous government agencies. Two such agencies are the the Coast Guard and The Transportation Security Administration. The Coast Guard is just recently joining the long list of departments being affected by the shutdown, while T.S.A. employees haven’t been paid since the shutdown began.
Around forty-two thousand members of the Coast Guard will be working without pay, making this the first time in United State’s history that an armed force is not being paid due to a Government shutdown. The reason the Coast Guard is having funding cut is because they fall under the department of Homeland Security, which is one of the departments being most affected. The other armed forces fall under the Department of Defense, who are still being paid. Members of the Coast Guard recently missed their January 15th paycheck. Many organizations such as the American Red Cross are donating money to service members. |

Since the beginning of the shutdown, the Transportation Security Administration (T.S.A.) workers have been working without pay. However, many members in the department are concerned that the longer the workers go without pay, the more safety issues will appear. Some employees have been calling in sick or outright leaving. Air Traffic Controller’s have said that they will continue to work through the shutdown but they also said that this lack of pay cannot be sustained. As a result, inspectors from several safety organizations, such as Airsafe.com, have warned that aircraft safety can be compromised if the shutdown continues any longer.
