Hurricane Irma’s Impact on Athletics
All of Plantation high school’s sport teams that has a season going on right now has been change due to Irma.
Hurricane Irma may have only caused minimal to no damages to Plantation High School, but it did have a large effect on the school’s sport teams. On September 7th, Broward county shut down all of their schools and are scheduled to reopen most of them on Monday 18th, including all after school activities .. From Football to Cross Country, all Fall sports had their games and practices rescheduled or cancelled. The Football team only missed one game which was scheduled on Saturday September 16th against Miramar high school which has been rescheduled to October 3rd. Unfortunately, the J.V. football team’s game against Blanche Ely been cancelled and are unable to make the it up.

Also, the volleyball team has been effected the most by Hurricane Irma because did not just miss a game or two, but six games and only two can be made up! The main reason why BCAA can only reschedule two out of six games is because that it’s too late to add any more games to team’s schedule. The team is currently in the middle of their season, plus the Colonels and their rival team-South Plantation had to find a date and place to conduct their game. In addition, both of them have schedule filled and the district can’t add any more games to the already filled season of Volleyball. The only games they can make up are with Fort Lauderdale high school and Blanche Ely high school, though both have been postponed and have yet to decide a date.
The swim team have to reschedule their game with Deerfield beach high school on Wednesday September 13th , but the date is to yet be decided. Cross Country cancelled two games which they unable to be made up, while the Golf team had to cancelled one game. Even though, most the school’s sport teams had rescheduled games or cancelled games, but one thing that all of them did happen to all of them is the lack of practice. The day’s loss to Irma will make any games coming in the weeks after more difficult them normal, due to no practice in a week in a haft. But hopeful all of Plantation’s sport teams will return back to normal and be successful. |
