Broward County schools open up as shelters for residents during hurricane Irma.

Plantation Elementary School, Pompano Beach High School, Monarch High School were some of the many other schools in Broward County that were held as shelters during hurricane Irma. They provided food and water and a place for residents to stay. The schools were powered by backup generators, that kept light and cool a/c running. They also welcomed those who were homeless to stay protected during the storm. Broward County picked up homeless people from four pick up points, so they can rest until the hurricane was over. Broward County opened up shelters for stranded pets, and family pets. West Boynton Recreation Center accepted over 250 pets until they ran out of room Miami Herald shares “Miami-Dade had briefly announced it no longer had room in shelters for pets.” having pet owners drop off their pets elsewhere.
