About 12 years ago, a category 3 hurricane named Wilma struck Florida. Recently, Florida was hit with another hurricane named Irma, a category 4 hurricane. The timing between the two is exactly 12 years, during that time people have become more and more involved in technology. Back when Wilma took out power, it was not as major as when we lost power to Irma about a week ago. Many people use the internet as their way of entertainment and unfortunately a lot of people lost internet and electricity. So, what did people do when all of that was taken away?
World History teacher, Mr. Shtrakhman, was asked that very question. He said that he fled to New York City on Thursday morning to get away from the destruction of the hurricane. “I drove 2500 miles in 10 days, 3 hotels, 15 power bars, and 18 starbucks. Isn’t that impressive?,” according to him, “I evacuated which EVERYONE should do in situations like this.” Officials told South Florida to evacuate, which some did, but a lot stayed at the comfort of their homes. Mr. Strahkman felt that evacuation was something everyone should have considered, unfortunately that didn’t happen.
Two upper class men students responded. A senior said,“Well for fun I read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and practiced dancing for 9 days. Oh, and I listened to the radio for updates on the storm.” Also, Khadijah Raja said, “Homework….Watched some movies on a DVD player.” Students found different ways to entertain themselves during Hurricane Irma. This shows that teenagers can survive without internet for at least couple of days.
